Sunshine Series psychology team with children at IDP Camp Abuja

On October 18, 2025, the psychology team from The Sunshine Series visited the IDP Camp at Malaysian Gardens, Apo Mechanic, Abuja, together with Dave Delucia, Founder and Director at Cascador, and Amanda Etuk, Program Director at Cascador. The visit reflected our ongoing commitment to promote the emotional well-being of children affected by displacement through safe, engaging, and therapeutic learning experiences.

Helping Children Understand and Express Emotions

Our team facilitated an Emotional Management Session to help children understand their emotions, express them in healthy ways, and learn coping skills for daily life. While Dave, Amanda, and our Executive Director, Aisha Bubah, toured the camp, Blessing, Kareemah, and Rahama led the session with the children.

The one-hour session began with an introduction to emotional management by Blessing. Kareemah then led Emotion Charades, a fun activity that encouraged the children to recognize and act out different feelings. Rahama followed with a Puppet Show featuring two young volunteers, using storytelling to teach empathy and communication. The session ended with coping tips, such as deep breathing and talking to a trusted person when feeling upset.

Creating Joyful and Safe Learning Spaces

The children participated eagerly throughout the session. They laughed, acted, and spoke freely about their emotions. One child said, “I liked the game where we acted happy and sad; it helped me express myself.” Another added, “Now I know to count to ten when I feel angry.”

These experiences reminded us how important it is to create spaces where children can explore their emotions safely and learn healthy ways to respond to them.

At The Sunshine Series, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to grow emotionally strong, especially those whose families have been displaced or affected by conflict. Building emotional resilience helps children develop confidence, build healthy relationships, and manage challenges in positive ways. This mission reflects our broader goal of promoting mental health awareness and inclusion across underserved communities.

The session ended with group photographs filled with joy, laughter, and gratitude. The smiles on the children’s faces reflected the warmth and hope the day brought. It was a meaningful experience that showed how care, play, and kindness can leave a lasting impact on young hearts.

Our work with children focuses on creating safe and supportive environments that nurture emotional well-being and resilience.
