In a bid to empower the next generation of leaders and advocates, a transformative workshop was held in Yankoji, Kwali on the 3rd of May 2024, organized by Leprosy Mission Nigeria. The workshop, facilitated by the Miss Blessing Adeyemo, from The Sunshine Series, a leading mental health organization in Nigeria. The workshop aimed to equip children and young people (CYP) with essential leadership and advocacy skills while promoting mental health awareness and combatting stigma and discrimination.
Advocacy, a powerful tool for societal change, was also extensively discussed. Participants learned the five crucial steps in advocacy. Self-advocacy, an essential skill for personal empowerment, was not overlooked. Participants learnt assertive methods such as keeping eye contact, speaking clearly, and remaining focused in order to effectively advocate for themselves.
Moreover, the workshop addressed mental health issues, including common illnesses like depression and anxiety, and highlighted the importance of recognizing and addressing stigma and discrimination. Participants engaged in enlightening discussions, debunking myths surrounding mental health and promoting inclusion in their communities.
