We recently embarked on our first Lay counseling skills training for the year with the dedicated team at The Leprosy Mission Nigeria (TLMN). TLMN, an NGO committed to restoring human dignity and self-reliance among people affected by leprosy, neglected tropical diseases, and disabilities, is now better equipped to provide crucial mental health support to the communities they serve, thus bridging the gap in mental healthcare access in Nigeria.

During the training, participants were introduced to essential counseling skills necessary for providing psychosocial support. Through engaging activities such as role plays, self-reflection, and theoretical discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of counseling, emphasizing its distinction from merely giving advice. Equipped with these skills, the team at TLMN is now prepared to deliver effective psychosocial support to their beneficiaries.

We trained the counselors to provide mental health support via a crisis helpline. They launched ‘Wellness Connect’, a toll-free Call Centre dedicated to providing psychological support and mental health referral services for individuals nationwide. The toll-free number is 080 0000 5060.

Lay counselors are essential in providing a listening ear, emotional support, and direction in a confidential and nonjudgmental manner. They are trained to recognize warning indications of severe distress or common mental diseases such as depression, anxiety, and stress, and to make appropriate recommendations as needed.
